169 - There is no staying up late except for one who is praying or traveling,

[169] Ahmad ibn Mani’ narrated to us, Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, on the authority of al-A’mash, on the authority of Ibrahim, on the authority of Alqamah, on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to chat with Abu Bakr about a matter of the Muslims, and I was with them. And in this chapter, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr, Aws ibn Hudhayfah, and Imran ibn Husayn, Abu Isa said: The hadith of Umar is a good hadith. And this hadith was narrated by al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah, on the authority of Ibrahim, on the authority of Alqamah, on the authority of a man from Ja’fi called Qays or ibn Qays, on the authority of Umar, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. This hadith is in a long story, The scholars among the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, the followers, and those who came after them differed regarding staying up late after the last ‘Isha’ prayer. Some of them disliked staying up late after the ‘Isha’ prayer, but some of them permitted it if it was in the sense of knowledge or what was necessary of needs. Most of the hadiths are about the permission. It was narrated from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, that he said: There is no staying up late except for one who is praying or traveling.
