The bliss and the torment of the grave

Updated: Nov 4

What should be noted is that the torment of the grave is the torment of the barzakh, so everyone who dies while deserving of torment will receive his share of it unless God overlooks it, whether he is grave or not, If he were eaten by wild beasts, or burned until he became ashes, or blown up in the air, or drowned in the sea, his soul and body would be subjected to as much torment as a grave would reach, this was said by Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, and al-Safarini reported it from him in Lawa`im al-Anwar.

The Holy Qur’an which prove the bliss & torture of the grave

Allah says

وحَاقَ بِآَلِ فِرْعَوْنَ سُوءُ الْعَذَابِ * النَّارُ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا غُدُوًّا وَعَشِيًّا وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوا آَلَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ {غافر: 45-46}

And an evil torment befell the family of Pharaoh, the Fire they are exposed to morning and evening and on the Day when the Hour arrives, admit Pharaoh’s family to the severest of the torment. {Ghafir: 45-46}

Allah says

God Almighty said: And among the Bedouins around you are hypocrites and among the people of Medina remained hypocritical, do not know them, We know them, We will torture them twice and then they will be returned to a great punishment [Al-Tawbah: 101]

God Almighty said

And whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a miserable life and We will gather him blind on the Day of Resurrection [Taha: 124]

It was known that the miserable living that God had made for them before the punishment of the Hereafter; because if that had happened in the Hereafter, it would not have happened because of his saying: And the torment of the Hereafter will be more severe and lasting [Taha: 127].

And if they have this world in their lives, then everyone who turns away from the remembrance of God must be among the disbelievers, His livelihood is difficult, and in our presence many of them have a better livelihood than many of those who come to the remembrance of God, Blessed and Most High, those who are obedient to Him are the believers; There is evidence that this is not the case, since the statement on this matter is devoid of these two aspects, the third view is correct, which is that this is in the isthmus.) Al-Saadi said: (A miserable life is interpreted as the torment of the grave, and that his grave is narrow for him, And he is trapped in it and tortured; as a reward for his turning away from the remembrance of his Lord, this is one of the verses that indicate the torment of the grave.)

On the authority of Al-Baraa bin Azib, may God be pleased with them both, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said: ((If a believer sits in his grave, Then he testified that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, That is his saying: God establishes those who believe with the firm word [Ibrahim: 27].

A general hadiths about the reckoning of the grave
What is in the two Sahihs, Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Al-Nasa’i

From the hadith of Anas that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “When a servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, to the point that he hears the knocking of their sandals, two angels come to him, sit him down, and say to him: What did you say about this man? -Muhammad - as for the believer, he says: I bear witness that he is the servant of God and His Messenger, and it is said: Look at your seat in Hell, for God has replaced it with a seat in Paradise, He will see them, and his grave will be made spacious for him by seventy cubits, and it will be filled with greenery until the Day of Resurrection, as for the infidel or hypocrite, it will be said to him: What did you say about this man? He says: I don't know. I was saying what people say, He will be told: You neither knew nor did you recite. Then he will be hit with iron hammers, a blow between his ears and he shouts a cry that can be heard by anyone next to him other than the two heavy creatures (humans and jinn) and his grave becomes narrow for him until his sides become different.”

And in the long hadith of Al-Baraa bin Azib, which was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Khuzaymah, Al-Hakim and others with an authentic chain of narration

The first of which is: “If the believing servant is in a state of separation from this world and a return to the Hereafter, Angels with white faces descended to him from heaven, and it says: “They carry it (the spirit) In that shroud and in that embellishment... and they ascend with it... and God Almighty says: Write the book of My servant in Aliyin, and return My servant to the earth, for from it I created them, and from it I will return them, and from it I will take them out another time, then his soul returns, and two angels come to him and sit him down... and it says: “And his grave will be widened for him as far as his sight can reach.” And in it when talking about the unbeliever servant and that the angels ascend with his soul, so do not open the gates of heaven to him.” So God says: Write his book about a prisoner in the lower earth, and his soul will be cast out, then his soul will be returned to his body, and two angels will come to him and make him sit...., and it says: “And his grave becomes narrow for him until his sides are separated,” and this clearly indicates that the soul, along with the body, is accompanied by bliss or torment.

The grave questions

Allah says

God strengthens those who believe with the firm word regarding the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and Allah astray the wrongdoers.)

When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace

finished burying the dead, he would stand and say (Ask forgiveness from God for your brother and ask for steadfastness for him, for now he is being asked)

On the authority of Al-Baraa bin Azib - may God be pleased with him - he said

We went out with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, to the funeral of a man from the Ansar, so we ended up at the grave, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, sat, we sat around him as if there were birds over our heads, and in his hand was a stick with which he was scratching the ground, Then he raised his head and said: (Seek refuge in God from the torment of the grave two or three times, He said: Two angels come to him and make him sit, and they say to him: Who is your Lord? He says: My Lord, God. They say: What is your religion? He says: My religion is Islam. They say to him: Who is this man who was sent among you? He said: He says: He is the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. They say: How do you know? And he says: I read the Book of God and believed in it, and I believed the additions in the hadith of Jarir, for that is the saying of God Almighty: (Allah makes those who believe firm.) In the same hadith, the Messenger says about the unbeliever: (And two angels come to him and make him sit, and they say: Who is your Lord? And he says: Ha-ha, I don’t know. And they say to him: What is your religion? And he says: Ha-ha, I don’t know, They say: Who is this man who was sent among you? He says: Ha, ha, I don’t know. Then a caller calls from the sky: If he lies, then spread a bed for him from the Fire, and clothe him from the Fire, and they opened for him a door to the Fire. He said: And some of its heat and poisons would come to him.)

Al-Saadi said

(The Almighty tells us that He establishes His faithful servants steadfast... in the life of this world... and in the Hereafter upon death with steadfastness in the Islamic religion and a good ending and in the grave, when the two angels were asked about the correct answer, if it was said to the dead person: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet? He guided them to the correct answer, that the believer says: God is my Lord, Islam is my religion, and Muhammad is my prophet. And God misleads the wrongdoers from what is right in this world and the hereafter, God did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. This verse indicates the temptation, torment, and bliss of the grave will exist, there are also texts reported from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, about temptation and its description, and the bliss and torment of the grave.)

The bliss and the torment of the grave
- The bliss of the grave

3- On the authority of Al-Baraa bin Azib, may God be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said about a believer when he answered the two angels in his grave: ((A caller will call from the sky: My servant has spoken the truth, so give him a bed from Paradise, and clothe him from Paradise and they opened for him a door to Paradise. He said: So its spirit and perfume will come to him, and his grave will be widened for him as far as his eye can see, He said: a man with a beautiful face, well-dressed, and a pleasant scent comes to him, He says: Give good news of what pleases you. This is your day that you were promised. Then he says to him: Who are you; Is your face the face that brings goodness?! He says: I am your good deed. Then he says: My Lord, establish the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.)

The legitimacy of seeking refuge from the torment of the grave and the angels’ reassurance to the believers
On the authority of Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace

He used to pray in prayer: ((O God, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the temptation of the Antichrist, and I seek refuge in You from the temptation of life and the temptation of death, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.) On the authority of Saad bin Abi Waqqas, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to teach us these words, as you learn to write: ((O God, I seek refuge in You from stinginess, I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being sent back to the most miserable life" The too old age" I seek refuge in You from the temptation of this world and the torment of the grave, Waki` ibn al-Jarrah said: (Good news occurs in three places: At death, in the grave, and at resurrection.) Abu Al-Aliyah Al-Riyahi said: (The believer is given good news in three situations: entering the grave, upon resurrection, and upon entering Paradise)

hose who are immune from the temptation and torment of the grave
1 - The martyr

On the authority of Rashid bin Saad, on the authority of a man from the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, that a man said:O Messenger of God, what is the matter with believers being tried in their graves except the martyr? He said: ((The flash of swords on his head is enough of a temptation!))

Al-Hakim Al-Tirmidhi said

(It means: He demonstrated the sincerity of what was in his conscience; He emerges for war and killing, so why is the question repeated to him in the grave?)

Nour al-Din al-Sindi said (((Enough with the flashing of swords))) i.e. with flashing swords; from lightning: meaning shining, and the addition is from adding an adjective to what is described, That is: their steadfastness before the swords and their sacrifice of their souls for God Almighty is evidence of their faith. There is no need to ask, and God Almighty knows best.)

2 - Whoever died stationed for the sake of God

On the authority of Salman, may God be pleased with him, he said: I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, say: ((The bond of a day and a night is better than fasting for a month and praying its prayer, If he dies, the work he was doing will continue, and his provision was granted and he was safe from temptation.) Ibn Abbas: That is, he will be protected from every temptation, the temptation of the grave.

3 - Whoever died of abdominal disease

On the authority of Abdullah bin Yassar, he said: I was sitting with Suleiman bin Sard and Khaled bin Arafat, and they mentioned that a man had died in with a disease in his stomach, So, they both longed to witness his funeral, and one of them said to the other: Did not the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, say: ((Whoever is killed by his stomach will not be tortured in his grave)) The other said: Yes, and in one narration: You are right.

Al-Mazhari said: This means: Whoever dies due to stomach pain will not be tormented in the grave, and perhaps the reason for this is that the stomach pain is severe and is an expiation for his sins, so there will be no torment for him in the grave.)

4 - Whoever recites Surah Al-Mulk every night

Al-Tirmidhi included in his “Jami’”: Chapters on the virtues of the Qur’an: Chapter on what was mentioned regarding the virtues of Surat Al-Mulk: No. (2890) on the authority of Ibn Abbas, who said: He struck some of the companions of the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - He hid it on a grave - and he did not think it was a grave - and there was a person in it reciting Surah “Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion” [Al-Mulk: 1] Until he sealed it, then he came to the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - and said: O Messenger of God, I put my tent on a grave -I do not think it is a grave - and there was a person in it reciting Surah Tabarak Al Mulk until he finished it, The Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace - said: “it is the deterrent, it is the savior, it saves him from the torment of the grave.”

- He died on or on Friday night Al-Tirmidhi included in his “Jami’a”:

Chapters on Funerals: Chapter on what was mentioned regarding those who die on Friday: No. (1074): On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr, he said: The Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace - said: “There is no Muslim who dies on Friday - or Friday night - except that God protects him from the temptation of the grave.” It's not agreed upon.
